In A Sweet Tradition, I wanted to pay homage to the beloved Southeast Asian dessert, ondeh-ondeh, which holds a special place in many of our hearts. These soft, chewy rice flour balls, filled with molten gula melaka (palm sugar) and coated with fresh grated coconut, symbolize the warmth of tradition and the joy of shared meals.
As I painted, I focused on capturing the intricate textures—the delicate coconut shreds, the vibrant green pandan-infused shells, and the rich, golden-brown filling peeking out from one open piece. The banana leaf and traditional floral plate add an authentic touch, evoking a sense of nostalgia and connection to cultural roots. Good news is that he has recently been adopted and is in good hands. Thank God for that.
