Today, my heart feels especially full after visiting an artist friend at her home. We spent a lovely afternoon having tea with her and her husband, talking about art, the art industry, and the many paths artists take. Conversations like these always feel nourishing, a reminder that art is not just about creation, but also about shared understanding and community.
I also had the joy of playing with her dog, a gentle golden retriever named Muffin. There is something so grounding about being around dogs, their warmth, simplicity, and unconditional presence.
Just a few doors away lives Raymond, my dog’s former caretaker. Seeing him brought back many memories of my very old dachshund, Sparky, who was on a wheelchair in his final years. When no doggy daycare would take Sparky in, Raymond stepped in without hesitation. Every morning at 7am, he would pick Sparky up from my home and care for him throughout the day with incredible patience and love.
Raymond’s golden retriever, Sophie, was Sparky’s gentle companion. She watched over him quietly, always calm and protective. Raymond spoon fed Sparky when he could no longer eat on his own, cleaned him, and made sure he was comfortable both on and off his wheelchair. The level of care, compassion, and dignity he gave Sparky still touches me deeply.
During this visit, I learned that Sophie has since passed on. While that news carried a tinge of sadness, I was glad to see that Raymond now has a playful 10 month old golden retriever and a majestic malamute. Life continues, shaped by love, loss, and renewal.
Today reminded me how grateful I am for the kindness of people who step in when it matters most. For friendships rooted in shared passions. For humans who treat animals with gentleness and respect. And for the quiet acts of compassion that stay with us long after the moment has passed.
